  • Minimizing anesthesia and surgical burden for elderly patients

The Korea Cancer Center Hospital has successfully performed a simultaneous robotic surgery to remove both prostate and kidney cancer in a 74-year-old patient.

Prostate and kidney cancers are separate diseases with distinct causes, and the simultaneous occurrence of tumors in both organs is a rare case. Given the complexity and difficulty of surgeries required for each condition, they are typically operated on separately in two stages. However, in elderly patients, multiple surgeries and repeated exposure to anesthesia increase the risk of complications, prompting consideration of concurrent procedures.

Dr. Kang Hyon Song, a urologist at the hospital’s Robotic Surgery Center, utilized “Revo-i,” a surgical robot developed with Korean technology, to perform a partial nephrectomy followed immediately by a radical prostatectomy. This approach minimized the physical burden on the elderly patient by reducing the number of anesthesia sessions and shortening the recovery period.

Remarkably, both surgeries were completed within four hours, demonstrating the high level of expertise and proficiency at the Korea Cancer Center Hospital’s Robotic Surgery Center. This case marks the first-ever simultaneous execution of two highly complex surgeries using the Revo-i system.

Dr. Song stated, "By treating both conditions in a single operation, we were able to enhance patient safety and quality of life,” adding that “the hospital’s specialized clinical experience in oncology was a key factor in the success of this operation.”

As a government-designated specialized medical institution under the Ministry of Science and ICT, the Korea Cancer Center Hospital continues to serve as a testbed for domestically developed medical technologies, contributing to the commercialization and advancement of Korea’s medical device sector. The hospital plans to further its research and clinical efforts to enhance public health.
