Medical Times Reporter Jung Hee Seok | Revo-i, the first surgical robot system developed in Korea has acquired the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety clearance on the 3rd.

Revo-i is a system in which a doctor performs a surgery by making minimal incision on the human body and inserting a robot arm inside the body while looking at 3D imaging. It is used during a general endoscopic surgery including cholecystectomy and prostatectomy.

In particular, Revi-I which can analyze, incise and suture surgery areas by using 4 robot arms, is a licensed product that has been permitted to be used in endoscopic surgery and is the second of its kind in the world following ‘Da Vinci’ developed by Intuitive Surgical in USA.

Majority of surgical robots that have been licensed so far were products that were used to guide the position of surgery areas and to cut bones during knee and artificial hip joint surgeries.

The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety revealed that “With the successful achievement of localizing surgical robots, it is expected to not only the burden of medical costs in patients who require endoscopic surgery can be reduced but also to assist patient recovery through shortening surgery time, reduce blood loss and others by substituting imported products”.
