First successful intraoral robotic surgery using Revo-i "High hopes for widespread use in otolaryngology"

meerecompany (CEO Joon Koo Kim) says Revo-i is expected to be widely used in otolaryngology surgery as the Korea Cancer Center Hospital recently succeeded in performing Trans Oral Robotic Surgery (TORS) on tonsillar cancer using Revo-i.


Revo-i is the first surgical robot developed and commercialized in Korea. This robot features a high-resolution 3D stereoscopic image, wide view, and multi-joint devices to support fine and delicate motions. Since its introduction at the Korea Cancer Center Hospital in November of last year, it has been actively used in otolaryngology, urology, obstetrics and gynecology, and colorectal and anal surgery. Since oral robotic surgery using Revo-i was performed this time, its usage is expanded to other applications.


According to the Korea Cancer Center Hospital, oral robotic surgery was performed on 3 patients for one month in September. They were two lateral oropharyngeal resection cases performed by Myung Chul Lee, the Head of the Department of Otolaryngology for tonsillar cancer patients, and prophylactic tonsillectomy performed by Ik Joon Choi, Head of the Department of Otolaryngology.


Generally, tonsillectomy removes the tonsil tissue by inserting a surgical instrument while looking at the lesion with the bare eye or with a magnifying glass through the mouth without skin incision. However, in oral robotic surgery, a robot endoscope is inserted into the mouth and removes the tonsil and the surrounding tissue using the surgical instrument attached to the robot arm. Although robotic surgery has the advantage of having wider visibility during surgery than the surgery performed with the bare eye and of being able to minimize damage to the surrounding tissue, thanks to the precise robotic arm movements. This can result in less pain and faster recovery for the patient. Robotic surgery is considered one of the more difficult operations to perform because the robotic arms have to be positioned so that they won't interfere with each other.


However, meerecompany's Revo-i is considered to be successful because it was able to perform the surgery with its wrist joint technology which moves the joint in various angles like a real wrist, flexible control, and a clear and enlarged vision realized with the 3D technology.


Dr. Myung Chul Lee of the Korea Cancer Center Hospital said, "We saw the strength of Revo-i once again after successfully completing the intraoral robot surgery, which was a new attempt for Revo-i." "We will make more medical services available to our patients by expanding the horizon of robotics surgery technology," he added.


Meanwhile, as a public medical institution under the Ministry of Science and IC, the Korea Cancer Center Hospital is leading cancer treatment for the public in Korea by steadily introducing diagnosis and treatment technologies that connect cutting-edge science and medical technology. The hospital opened the Robot Surgery Center in August and has promoted robotic cancer surgery using Revo-i in close cooperation with various cancer specialists and operation nurses.
